Understanding the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 (GLB) prohibits the use of false pretenses also known as “pretexting”.  When Congress wrote the GLB act, they did not make it illegal to obtain or sell a consumer’s bank and asset information. The GLB only makes it illegal to use pretexting, misrepresentation or impersonation to gather a consumer’s bank information.  There are many legal ways to obtain asset and bank information without breaking the law.  PAL does not use pretexting to obtain financial records.  All information reported by PAL is legally obtained from public and private sources and in compliance with federal and state guidelines.
